CNN —The House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed an assistant US attorney on the Hunter Biden criminal case, according to a copy of the subpoena reviewed by CNN. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan initially requested testimony from Assistant US Attorney Lesley Wolf in June along with a number of Justice Department officials involved in the Hunter Biden criminal investigation. The Department of Justice has made six high-level officials, including special counsel David Weiss, available to testify, but has not allowed the panel to interview Wolf. In the subpoena letter, Jordan called the DOJ’s reasons for withholding Wolf’s testimony “unpersuasive.” DOJ declined to comment to CNN on the subpoena. During his closed-door interview with Congress earlier this month, Weiss defended Wolf.

Marjorie Taylor Greene said she voted against him in part because he voted for the "Democrat gay marriage bill." So you're out of step, you're out of line, Marjorie, if you've got a problem with gay marriage. When the Colorado Republican announced this past week that he would not seek reelection, he began with the type of criticism of Democratic policies that is standard fare for a hard-line conservative. Yet under political pressure in Colorado, Buck decided there was no way forward for him in Congress. Alone among Republicans, Buck said he was opposing Jordan because he had not clearly stated that Biden won the 2020 election. This past week, Trump called Buck a “weak and ineffective Super RINO,” or Republicans In Name Only. The next day, Buck testified about a legal effort in Colorado to ban Trump from the ballot under the Constitution’s “insurrection clause."

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — U.S. Rep. Kay Granger of Texas, the Republican chairwoman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, said Wednesday she will not seek reelection in 2024 after nearly three decades in Congress. Granger, 80, is the nation's longest-serving GOP congresswoman and was first elected in 1996. Her decision ends a barrier-breaking career that included serving as Fort Worth's first female mayor and Texas' first GOP congresswoman. Granger was among the Republicans who opposed Rep. Jim Jordan's bid to become House speaker. She said she will work with new Speaker Mike Johnson “to advance our conservative agenda" for the remainder of her term.

“I say to Speaker Johnson – I plead with him – don’t repeat the mistake of McCarthy and others and just follow the hard-right in a partisan way,” Schumer said at a weekly news conference. “It’s not good for the country, it’s not good for the House, it’s not even good for the Republican Party. “Speaker Johnson should learn from the examples of Speaker Boehner, of Speaker Ryan and of Speaker McCarthy,” Schumer said. Though he’s not an outspoken conservative flamethrower like Rep. Jim Jordan, who GOP centrists blocked from gaining the gavel, a Johnson speakership marks a dramatic shift to the right for the conference. And though he faces the same difficulties as former Speaker Kevin McCarthy did with a razor-thin Republican majority, how he fares with the faction of hard-liners that ultimately ousted McCarthy is another story.

In the end, the only man who could unify House Republicans behind him was a relatively little-known and mild-mannered evangelical Christian from Louisiana. While Gaetz maintains otherwise, his angry GOP colleagues have plenty of evidence to make their case that it was an attention ploy. Rep. The attention economy doesn't preclude an ability to govern — an effective politician might seek to harness their celebrity towards worthy ends.

CNN —Republicans’ long public nightmare came to an end this past week when Louisiana’s Mike Johnson became the 56th speaker of the House. Their votes were outside the mainstream among all House members but not within the House Republican Conference. In other words, 37% of House Republicans are more conservative than the new speaker. That puts Johnson right in the middle third of today’s House Republican Conference. Unlike Johnson, Jordan really is out of the mainstream not just within Congress overall but the House Republican Conference, as well.

Rep. Nancy Mace recently walked into a party meeting wearing a giant "A" on her shirt. She said her "scarlet letter" symbolized how she'd been "demonized" for her vote to oust McCarthy. It was an obvious reference to Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter," a book published in 1950 in which a woman is forced to wear a red letter "A" in public as punishment for committing adultery. "I'm actually surprised it got the amount of attention it did," she said, later adding that "it got way more than it should have." Another unknown factor is how House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan – who spent much of the last three weeks running for speaker – will return to the scene. A source familiar with Johnson’s thinking told CNN, “He believes it’s a fact-finding mission. GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans, who represents a Virginia district Biden won in 2020, told CNN, “We have so much work we need to get done including these appropriations bills. I don’t think so,” GOP Rep. Mike Garcia, who represents a competitive district in California, told CNN of the inquiry. House Republicans have not held an impeachment inquiry hearing since their first one on September 28, where expert witnesses brought in by Republicans acknowledged they did not yet have the evidence to prove the accusations leveled against the president.
